Theory:
NEnvironmental discourses cannot be looked at in an isolated way. They are part of beliefs, social relations, institutional structures, power relations and material practices. All environmental arguments involve society and its inherent struggles and conflicts. History of capitalism coincides with environmental problems. It is predominant in the economic systems the point of view that economic growth, technological efficiency and capital accumulation are factors that benefit nations. But no one can regret the increase of arguments and environmental practices in the recent years and the search in favor of an alternative society.
Instrumental values alienate human beings. There is a strong necessity in favor of collective movements that can reorientate civilization in the direction of comprehending values inside nature. It involves a deep feeling of belonging to nature. In this process we can create a community meaning in which we include soil, water, plants, animals, Earth, people - a conscience of environmental relations that operate in the place we live: to be an active member of a biotic community.
Solutions based on large scale projects are part of the past and unviable to the planet. Each region must take care of residues it produces and energy necessities respecting local potentialities. Large scale constructions only benefit large investments, potential companies and cause enormous impacts. We defend local and community solutions. A large scale electric plant, for example, requires a network of many kilometers of wires and towers to distribute electricity and also causes significant impacts itself. Every house, rural property, condominium, residential or commercial block can produce renewable energy and recycle residues. This means a paradigmatic change in which a systemic vision substitutes a linear thinking. We have been defending these changes of values by presenting practical results that can promote a new type of society that is sustainable and viable to the planet.
Projects
OIA works with projects in the following areas:
1. Environmental Education
2. Environmental and Community Journalism
3. Organic Agriculture
4. Production of Biogas
5. Environmental Planning
6. Recycling of Nutrients
7. Fish Production
8. Eco-Tourism
OIA is a non-Government Organization (NGO) with non profit intentions that promotes projects in the area of environmental sanitization, environmental planning, sustainable development and environmental education. OIA was founded in 1993 with the finality of managing integrated biosystems including recycling of nutrients from the biomass originated from residues. The main objective is to develop solutions that are environmental sustainable, socially acceptable and economically viable to rural and urban communities. We work with recycling, biodegradable materials, reusing of processes, renewable energy, control of residues, development of organic agriculture, environmental planning, agro ecological journalism, reuse of nutrients, environmental sanitization, environmental education and social promotion.
Our projects intend to promote environmental recuperation and sustainable development through sustainable practices of economic generation together with community organization, environmental education and revitalization of degraded areas. With the implantation of biosystems we are providing cleaning of hydrologic resources, renewable energy in the form of biogas and food production. This way we can keep local population in their place of origin with economic activities that take use of local potentialities with actions like organic agriculture, fish production and ecotourism.
On the 11th of November 2003 the Brazilian Minister for Environment, Marina Silva signed the approval of the "Environmental Planning Project for the Reserves of El Nagual and Querencia" in the municipality of Mage in the State of Rio financed by the Inter-American Development Bank. OIA was proponent of this project that integrated important conservation zones such as Private Reserves, National Park and Swamp conservation areas of Guanabra bay. The project also promoted environmental education, biological, geographical and social diagnosis and an environmental and sustainable development plan for the region. OIA continues contributing to the development of the region with ecotourism and is trying to obtain finance to construct new biosystems to clean local waters. OIA also keeps an important partnership with the local Agro-technical School.
